According to A History of the Establishment of the Hillsdale Rural Cemetery Association 1874:
Son of Benjamin and Ruth Holman Johnson. His ancestors were prominent among those who gave Massachusetts its early history. His grandfather Isaac Johnson was a magistrate and contemporary with John Quincy and Col. John Holman. He served with them in the military and in the Colonial Legislature of Massachusetts. His mother, Ruth Holman, was the wife of Benjamin Johnson and the daughter of Col. John and Ann Holman, and the niece of John Quincy, and cousin to the wife of Ex President John Adams, and sister to the wife of Ephraim Cary, the ancestor of the sweet sisters of song, Phebe and Alice Cary. He married Jane Robinson, Nov. 8, 1779.
