Alexander Edwin Bending was born about 1841 in Baltimore, Maryland. He enlisted during the Civil War as a private for the Union in Company G, 1st Regiment, Maryland Eastern Shore Infantry on October 21, 1862. He mustered out on February 23, 1865. He transferred to Company F, of the Maryland 11th Infantry Regiment that same day and mustered out on June 15, 1865 at Baltimore, Maryland.

Alexander became a miller before he re-enlisted on March 27, 1872 for 5 years. He was discharged at Fort Klamath, Oregon in 3-27-1877. In 1880 he lived in Modoc, California. Then later moved to Oregon where he was a barber. He married Miss Davidson. Her name first is not yet known. She was born in Illinois. They had a least two children: Gertrude (around 188) and Nina (about 1899). By 1890 he was living in Harrisburg, Oregon and later moved to Albany, Oregon where he owned his own barber shop. By 1910 he was widowed. Alexander died October 16, 1915 in Douglas County, Oregon.
