He served two terms in the regular Rangers and one in the special Rangers and was an Austin Police Officer. He was 6'1 1/2" tall and had red hair. He had a special relationship with his niece, Bettie, and gave her a bracelet when she was a small girl that she still has over 75 years later.
When Joe was a Texas Ranger, he would escort prisoners to the prison in Sugarland. He didn't put them in hand irons, because he said they would be embarrassed enough being taken to prison. He never had one try to escape.
