Mr. Border died Thursday at Genesis Mdical Center-East Campus, Davenport.
He retired in 1986 as a millwright after 29 years at Alcoa, Davenport Works. After that, he worked six years at the former Davenport Bank & Trust and Norwest Bank & Trust, retiring last month.
Mr. Border married Mary Striegel in 1944 in Davenport. She died in 1990. He married Lynne Shields Prebonich in 1992 in Davenport.
He served 32 years as a volunteer for the Bettendorf Fire Department, retiring as assistant fire chief in 1988.
During World War II, he served with the Army in Europe. He received the World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle stars, three Overseas Service bars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Border was a member of the church, VFW Post 9128 and American Association of Retired Persons. He also enjoyed fishing as a hobby.
Memorials may be made to the Care and Share program at St. Anthony's Catholic Church or Bettendorf Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kathi (Mrs. Fred) Rader, Davenport, and Sandra (Mrs. Loren) Garber, Latah, Wash.; two granddaughters; and a great-grand-daughter.
