Mrs. Elberta Futrelle Copeland, widow of Charles Harrison Copeland, died in Southern Pines, NC at the age of 77. Elberta was a legislative correspondent and the head of the State House News Service (Massachusetts), retiring in 1947 after 34 years. She succeeded to the ownership and management of the News Service after the death of her husband in 1913. Elberta, a veteran reporter, was the only woman life-long charter member of the Massachusetts State House Press Association.

Born in Barnesville, Georgia, Elberta was the daughter of Wiley Harmon Heath Futrell(e) and Linnie A. Bevil. Her brother was Jacques Heath Futrelle, the mystery novelist who went to his death in the sinking of the steamer Titanic when it hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage (link below).

Elberta met her husband, Charles H. Copeland when he moved from Cambridge, MA to work at a newspaper in the south. They married and moved to Boston, MA where she lived most of her life. At the time of her death she was survived by her one daughter, Dorothy (Mrs. George C. Moore); three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Elberta was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery along side her husband, whose cremains were relocated from Cambridge Cemetery.
