Dr. Rev E. C. McDaniel was the long time Pastor of 8th and Main Street Baptist Church in Edward Carlton McDaniel, Rev., Dr., ("Brother Mac"), 69, passed away at his home in Jacksonville, Fla. on Tuesday, August 3, 1999 after a lengthy battle with cardiomyopathy, under the expert care of Dr. Eugene Page and Dr. Carlos Sotolongo. He was retired after ministering for fifty years and served as Associate Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Toccoa, Ga., and as Pastor of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Lavonia, Ga., Snowville Baptist Church, Snowville, Va., East Thomaston Baptist Church, Thomaston, Ga., and for 28 years, as Pastor of Main Street Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla. Upon his retirement from Main Street in 1995, the church membership conferred upon him the honor of Pastor Emeritus. Most recently, Dr. McDaniel served as Pastoral Advisor to Dr. Terry Gore at Franklin Street Baptist Church in Jacksonville. The following is a brief representation of Dr. McDaniel's diverse ministry: guest Chaplain for the Ga. House of Representatives, 1962; guest Chaplain for the Congress of the United States, 1970; Bachelor of Divinity, 1969; Doctorate, May 5, 1973; Professor for Luther Rice Seminary, 1973-74; member of the Executive Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1969-76; member of the American Security Council of the U.S. Congress, 1986-89; "Who's Who in Religion", 1975-76; author of The Coming Events for Mankind, 1968; and director of twenty tours to the Holy Land. Dr. McDaniel leaves behind his immediate family, wife, Claire Connor McDaniel; three daughters, Wanda McDaniel Secrist (Dennis) of Jacksonville, Lisa Marie McDaniel (Mark Foltz-fiance') of Marietta, Ga., and Julie McDaniel Strickland of Jacksonville; three sons, Rev. Timothy Edward McDaniel (Nikki) of Tallahassee, Charles Edward (Chip) McDaniel of Jacksonville, and foster son, Everette Martin of Walkertown, N.C.; five granddaughters, one great-granddaughter and two step-grandchildren. Born in Salem, Va., Dr. McDaniel was the son of James Clarence McDaniel and Texanna Jane Murdock McDaniel (both deceased), and the brother of Kathleen McDaniel Young (Harry, deceased) of Salem, Va., J. Owen McDaniel (June) of Cheraw, S.C., and J. C. McDaniel, Jr. (deceased). Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, August 7, 1999 at Main Street Baptist Church with Dr. Terry Gore and Dr. Paul Wrenn officiating. Visitation will be held at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home on Hendricks Avenue from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 1999. The interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery - Carilion Bell Tower Chapel. Pallbearers will be church members and friends who served under Dr. McDaniel's pastoral leadership throughout the years. Ministers of the Jacksonville Baptist Association will serve as honorary pallbearers.
