Bill was the only child of Paul and Elizabeth (McDougal) Berndt. Bill's mother died at his birth and he was adopted and raised by his Uncle John Wesley and Aunt Susannah Vinzant. They lived in a two story log house hued out by hand. They made their own furniture from oak and cherry wood. Bill has one half-sister Chassie Taylor. Bill married Susanna Elma Vinzant December 15, 1907. She was the daughter of Stephen & Nancy Finley Yingling Vinzant. They lived on the "Old Home Place" most of their lives. They moved the log house to the top of the hill where it now stands. It took eight team of horses to move the house, finally moving it in two sections. The house is 107 years old.
