London Mills, IL - Miriam Carol Pukalo, 85, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of London Mills, Ill., died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill.

She was born Sept. 10, 1923, in Knox County, Ill., the daughter of Vern F. and Laura Hamman Effland. She married Alexander Pukalo on April 29, 1961, in Park Forest, Ill. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1994.

She is survived by two sisters, Mildred F. Meltelka of London Mills, Ill., and Roberta R. Whitworth of Park Forest, Ill.; and 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Harold E. Effland, G. Dale Effland and Glen H. Effland; and one sister, Catherine A. Stiarwalt.

Miriam graduated from London Mills Community High School in 1941; she attended Brown's Business College in Peoria, Ill.

She worked as a secretary and personal assistant in several businesses, most recently Marsh & McLennan, PC in Chicago, Ill.

She was a member of Rogers Park Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be in East Midway Cemetery.
