Grief's military history includes serving as a Private in Company D, Santa Fe (New Mexico) Battalion Mountain Volunteers, during the Mexican-American War from 1 July 1847 - 17 October 1848 (he was discharged at Independence, MO); he also served in Baird's Cavalry (4th Regiment, Arizona Brigade; Showalter's Regiment), Texas, in the Confederate States of America for 18 months during the Civil War.
