The son of Micajah Harris Foster & Sally Sarah Virden of Douglas County, Missouri. He married Sarah Ann Sanders in 1858, in Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana. He was a Civil War veteran, participating in the battle of Springfield (Missouri). A pioneer of Ozark County, he was considered a 'man of means' by historians of the era. He made a living as a woodsman, hunter, trapper and a 'physician', the latter from what he learned living in the wilderness, using natural remedies and herbs to treat various illnesses. His skills as a physician were reportedly also employed during his military service.
