BENJAMEN DE PUY
Soldier
Of The Revolution.
Died, 1842
Aged 90 Yrs.

Benjamin's pension record further says the family Bible was burned in the stonehouse at Fort DePuy. Many historians believe he may have had a brother named Benjamin who died young.

This veteran's service has been recorded in Lysander. He married Sally Van Auken before leaving Ulster Co. In Albany there is an early map of De Puy's island in Seneca river.

Additions:
Benjamin was baptized 2 Nov 1758 at Magheckemeck Dutch Reformed Church which later became Deerpark Reformed Church . These records are again quoted in a 1892 compilation intitled "Church Life - Deerpark Days". However,in his pension application he states that he was born 29 Dec 1764. He is the son of Benjamin Depuy, Esq. and Elizabeth Swartwout.

Benjamin Depuy, jun., married Ariaantie Van Aken, affectionately called Sally. 15 July 1787 in the Machackemeck (Deerpark) Reformed Church. Arena was the daughter of Abraham C. VanAuken and Catherine Rosenkranz. She was born 1 Jan 1769 in Minisink, Orange, New York.

He, his brother Samuel and Moses Cortright were some of the first pioneers to settle Aurelius, which later became part of Owasco settlement. He is found there in 1800. He purchased land in 1805 in Marcellus, and in 1806 purchased land in Baldwinsville.

He was declared an Invalid in 1823, but is found a trustee of Lysander School; Baptist School, District 10, Cold Springs, & Lysander in 1825.

His headstone clearly reads that he died in 1842. Cemetery records state he was "a soldier of the Revolution. Died in 1842. Aged 90 years".

The Onondaga Standard Jan 29, 1845 printed an obituary: "DePuy, Benjamin: Died in Lysander (Cold Springs) Settlement on the 19th. Mst. Benjamin DePuy, esq, aged 79 years. Mr. DePuy was one of the first settlers in the town." This Benjamin was indeed one of the first settlers, and no other Benjamin has been identified to be in the area of Onondaga of an advanced age. All family records were burned before the turn of the nineteenth century.

Thus, birth and death year are still in dispute.
