The following information was supplied by Sharren Formby:

Gus Lipford Fomby joined the United States Navy the end of 1945 or January 1946. His service # was 934 89 35.

On the 25th of February 1946 Gus first boarded the Ship USS Ariel AF 22 (Mizar-class Store Ship) in Brooklyn New York for duty with a rating of S2c (Seaman 2nd Class. On 2 Oct 1946 he was aboard the USS Grand Canyon AD 28 (Shenandoah-class Destroyer). By this time he had a rate increase to S1GM (Seaman 1st class Gunners Mate. Gus sailed on the USS Grand Canyon until 1 January 1947 when on the 25 of January something happened to him.

In the Navy Muster Roll 2 Feb 1947 Gus was aboard the USS Huntington CL 107 (Fargo-class Light Cruiser) and the following information was stated: "RDUT ComNavMed ltr P16-3/MM ser 140 dtd 25 Jan 1947." The Report of 19 Mar 1947 has Gus on aboard the USS Huntington CL 107 his rating was changed to S1 (Seaman 1st Class). This information was stated on the document. "Tran U.S. Naval Hospital, Brooklynn NY. Auth: Medical Form 'G'." On 1 Apr 1947, Gus still aboard the USS Huntington, received this information, "USNH, Brooklyn, N.Y. AUTH: Pers 6303-RDUT VIJ-1 P16-3/MM of 6-27-45." Gus remained on the Huntiington CL 107 until 3 Aug 1947. This information was on the Muster Roll dated 3 Aug 1947. "TRAN 1137 to U.S.S. Houston (CL 81) Cleveland-class Light Cruiser) for duty. Auth: CBCL (Admin) Desp. 031938Z of 7-47 and CCD-12 Ltr. FB3-12/P16-3/MM Serial 293 of 22 Jul 1947. On 9 Sep 1947 still on the USS Houston CL 81 this information was present, "TRAN To R/S, Phila., PA., for terminal leave and disch. Auth: A1Nav 476-46."

Mr. G. L. Fomby, 77, of Hogansville, Ga., died Monday, June 9, 2003 at his home.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12 in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Milton Hall will officiate, and burial will be in Corinth Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Born September 25, 1925 in Heard County, Mr. Fomby was the son of the late Robert Lee and Bessie Dingler Fomby. He lived in Hogansville most of his life, was retired from Uniroyal Inc. and was the former owner and operator of Five Points Grocery in Heard County. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War Two.

Surviving are daughter, Mrs. Gayla Cleveland of Mountvile; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Helen Fomby of Hogansville and Greg Fomby of Douglasville; two sisters, Mrs. Earline Waller of Hogansville and Mrs. Mozelle Thompson of West Point; brother, Frank Fromby of Hogansville; grandchild, Cassie Hudgins of LaGrange; two great-grandchildren, Zach Whittington and Chase Whittington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Robinson Fomby and a son, Bob Fomby.
