In 1900 he and his wife and their four children lived in a rowhouse they were renting at 2135 Sarah Street in Pittsburgh, PA. He worked as a locomotive engineer, and Robert as a shop laborer.

In 1910 the six of them lived in a place they were renting at 227 West 37th Place in Los Angeles, CA. He and Robert both worked as locomotive engineers, Charles as a locomotive fireman, and Howard as a grocery salesman.

In 1920 he and Elizabeth lived at 110 Riverside Drive in Riverbank, CA. He worked as a hostler in a roundhouse.

In 1940 he lived in a convalescent home owned and run by Lillie Evans and her son at 3594 Ventura Avenue in Fresno, CA. He was one of 25 lodgers living there.
