- At Fort Smith, Arkansas on September 1, 1862, Alexander enlisted in the Confederate Army for three years of the War. The roll gives his description as: age 23, eyes blue, hair dark, complexion fair, height 5 ft. 8 inches , and he had no peculiarities. Another roll lists his hair as being light. He was a private in Company K of Mitchell's Reg't of Missouri Infantry. Later in January 1864 he was a second Corporal in Co. K in the 8th Reg't of Missouri Infantry. Alexander's name appears on a roll of prisoners of war June 7, 1865. He had attained the rank of fifth Sergeant. The names of his brothers Thomas McDuffa, and Seth also appear on this roll. His commander Captain Curry surrendered the eighth regiment on May 26, 1865 and they were paroled at Shreveport, Louisana on June 7, 1865.
