Daughter of William Henry Hodges and Parthenia Clementine Underwood, mother of Pauline Hodges Nelson.
Late wife of Ephraim S. Underwood.
Her daughter, Polly Hodges Nelson was born out of wedlock and is the daughter of Ulas Koontz. Her family refused to let them marry, likely because several of the Koontz men had been kicked out of the local church for "gambling and drinking" per church records. Polly never knew her father and her mother died of pregnancy complications when Polly was a young child. Ephraim refused to allow Georgia to be taken to the hospital to have surgery for a tubal pregnancy and she died on the kitchen table. Polly referred to her step-father as "the old devil" all her life. Ephraim was Georgia's much older cousin on her mother's side. It is believed Polly was sent to an orphanage after her mother's death, until her aunt and uncle, Lee and Hazel Hodges Winkle took her in and raised her as their own. Polly's father Ulas subsequently married Della Randles Boyant and had two more daughters, who also refused to have anything to do with Polly or her family. Polly's mother's sister Claude Hodges Underwood confirmed the name of Polly's father prior to Polly's death.
