IN MEMORIAM

Benj. Jacobs, the subject of thes memoir, was a son of the late John Jacobs, and was born in Turbett township, February 25th, 1822, and died September 5th, 1893, aged 71 years, 6 months and 10 days. He was married to Nancy Jane Rice, Dec. 23rd, 1845, and this happy marriage was blest with seven children, namely, John F. Jacobs, married to Sarah E. Kohler; Anna M., married to John A. Kohler; Wm. C. Jacobs, married to Sallie C. Deibert, and resides in Philadelphia; Rebecca Elizabeth, Martha Ann, Emma Jane and an infant daughter, deceased. Mrs. Jacobs departed this life Nov. 14, 1884 [Tombstone says November 19, 1884], almost nine years before her husband.

Mr. Jacobs united with the Presbyterian church of Port Royal early in life, and was a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, witnessing a good profession. By occupation he was a tiller of the soil, and devoted his entire time to agricultural pursuits and succeeded in accumulating by hard and honest toil enough of this world's goods to insure him ease and comfort in his declining years. On the fourth of July, 1891, while engaged at work in the hay field, the team of horses which he was driving ran away, and Mr. Jacobs falling beneath the wheels of a wagon loaded with hay had one of his ankles crushed, requiring the limb to be amputated. This terrible accident was a severe shock to his nervous system, from which he never fully recovered. About ten days before his death, he was seized with bilious dysentery, and soon developed into typhoid fever, and although receiving the best medical attention and most careful nursing, he continued to grow worse until death relieved him of his sufferings.

The funeral services were held at the late home of the deceased in Turbett township at 10 o'clock on Thursday morning following his demise, conducted by Rev. R. M. Campbell and the interment took place in the Church Hill Cemetery, followed thereto by a large company of relatives and neighbors, who loved him in life and cherish his memory in death. Mr Jacobs was the embodiment of honor and leaves as a legacy to his children an unimpeachable record for honesty and uprightness. Page: JACOBS Surname File
