Platt and his brother were identical twins.

In 1971, he wrote a number of brief biographies for his direct family members, which he called "Smith Genealogy Addenda" (Referring to the 1909 book by his uncle, L. Bertrand Smith "Jesse Smith, His Ancestors And Descendants". The following he what he wrote regarding himself:

"Mr. Smith Graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, in 1921 and was a Professional Engineer, P.E., registered by the University of the State of New York. He was a design engineer for the Dupont Company in Wilmington, Delaware, 1934-1935, and a Naval Architect at the U.S. Naval Shipyard from 1935 to 1965. He was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron with the rating of Navigator from 1954-1972, and served with the N.Y. National Guard from 1922 to 1930. Ninth Generation descendant of Jesse Smith, making him and all his descendants eligible to the Society of Mayflower Descendants."

The Febuary, 1980 issue of Band News, the newsletter for the Kings County American Legion Band, had this on the front page: - Taps For A Gentle Man - With deep regret, we announce the passing of one of our oldest and most beloved band members, Platt Smith. "Smitty" as we have called him, played the trombone in the band for some forty years. A familiar figure who rarely missed a performance, was well known for his gentle and mild manner. His presence was like a sign that "All Was Well". Band members will remember him fondly for helping us keep an historical record through his famous photographs. We will miss "Smitty" and extend to his sisters and family our most sincere condolences. The Feb. 7 rehersal ended with "Nearer My God To Thee" in Platt Smith's Memory.
