Walter Joseph Doyen, 84, of Gwinn, died Tuesday morning, January 1, 2008, at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born August 23, 1923, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a son of the late John and Mary (Joachim) Doyen.

He was a WWII veteran having served in the army. His tours of duty took him to Italy, France and Germany.

Walter married the former Beatrice Monhead in Munising on March 8, 1953.

He was employed for many years at the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, retiring in 1984.

Walter was a member of Gwinn VFW Post #5670 and St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Walter was a proud owner of a 1934 Ford Pick-up and took great pride in driving it in the Gwinn Fun Daze Parade. It took several years before he finally made it through the whole parade and won a first place trophy.

The grandchildren will greatly miss the countless games of cards he played with them. Even during his last few days he was still up to playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Doyen of Gwinn; four children, Rose (Tony) Norman of Okataie, SC, Frank (Angie) Doyen of Gwinn, Walter Doyen Jr. of Bark River, MI and Janice (John) Marchant of Marquette; six grandchildren, Jody (Valarie) Norman, Danielle (Steve) Cowling, Garret Marchant, Preston Marchant, Travis Doyen and Bradley Doyen; and great-grandchildren, Hannah and Gavin Cowling. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven siblings.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 4, 2008 at 5 p.m. in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn with Rev. Ronald Timock officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Canale Gwinn Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Escanaba in the spring.
