Longtime Alaskan and Soldotna resident Eugene Orval Earll died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at his home with his family by his side after a lengthy battle with esophageal cancer. He was 69.

A viewing will be from 1-2:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Soldotna. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. at the church. Bishop Robert Grant will officiate. Burial will follow the services at the Kenai City Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial at the church.

Pallbearers will be Leith Eugene Earll, Jody Wesley Earll, Dennis Kay Earll, TJ Wesley Earll, Trevor Leith Earll, and Coty Kartchner Earll. Honorary pallbearer will be Wesley Kay Earll.

Mr. Earll was born Dec. 24, 1939 in Winner, South Dakota. He grew up and received his education in Winner, graduating high school in 1958. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-66. Mr. Earll moved to Alaska in 1967 and resided in Nikiski. He moved to Soldotna in 1977.

He was a certified pipe welder, fabricator and pipe fitter, beginning work in the oilfield in 1967. He worked for many companies throughout Cook Inlet and the North Slope. He retired in 2003 and started working for Independent Living in 2007.

Mr. Earll was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an avid gardener and loved spending time at the family cabin in Caribou Hills. Throughout his years, he snowmachined, hunted, fished and spent time camping with his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed his daily walks with his dog "Knot" to get the mail. They were pretty much an inseparatable pair. You could always count on Knot to be riding shotgun.

"Gene will be remembered by his family, and especially his grandchildren for the many hours they spent with him working in the yard and garden and picking potatoes. Gene always had the best looking trees in his yard and shared the trees with his many family members and grudgingly as well with the local moose population." his family said.

Mr. Earll was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Mary (Toman) Earll and his brother, Roger Lee Earll all of Winner, S. Dakota.

He is survived by his wife, Leatha Earll of Soldotna; mother-in-law, Celia Kartchner of Soldotna; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Carol Earll of Valentine, Neb.; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Wally Eklund of Gregory, S. Dakota; sons and daughters-in-law, Leith (Gene) and Kimberly Earll, Jody and Tracey Earll and Kay and Jamie Earll all of Soldotna; daughter, Tia Earll of Soldotna; grandchildren, Ashley, TJ, Taliah, Trevor, Coty, McKenzie, Katelyn, Taylor, Casey and Wesley Earll all of Soldotna; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews in Alaska and the Lower 48.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to help aid with medical expenses may be sent to, 311 W Beluga St, Soldotna, AK 99669 or sent to The Independent Living Center on K-Beach Road.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
