Horace Greeley Iliff was the sixth child (of nine children) of Alpheus and Mary Iliff of Hunterdon, New Jersey. He was born May 4, 1858. When Horace was only four years of age, his father Alpheus joined the 11th Regiment of the New Jersey Volunteers and served the Union Army during the American Civil War. Alpheus was a prisoner of war at Andersonville, Georgia, until the end of the war. Horace Iliff came to Nebraska from New Jersey in 1882, at the age of 24 years, and settled in the village now known as Eldorado. He purchased property from a homesteader, and establish himself in the community. He returned to New Jersey and brought back to Nebraska his bride, the widow Susanna Pickle Lindabury. Horace and Susanna were married on July 4, 1889, when Horace was 31. Four years later, Addie Mae Iliff was born to Horace and Susanna. When Addie was only two years of age, Susanna died while giving birth to a stillborn son. Both Susanna with her baby son resting in her arms, are buried in the Harvard Cemetery, Harvard, Nebraska. Horace Iliff was active in the growth and development of the village of Eldorado and served the community as Constable. In 1918, following his retirement from farming and ranching he and his second wife, Kate, moved to California where he lived until his death on April 1, 1929. He is buried in the Greenwood Mausoleum in San Diego, California.
