THREE DIE INSTANTLY WHEN BOILER EXPLODES - 18 CHILDREN FATHERLESS - COUNTY MEN VICTIMS OF BLAST WEDNESDAY MORNING IN RAYWICK LOCALITY - BODIES ARE MANGLED. Three persons were killed Wednesday morning between 8 and 9 o'clock in the explosion of a boiler on a hillside in the Sulphur Lick section of this county, a few miles from Raywick, near the Nelson County line. The dead are Herman Riggs, 35 year old father of nine children, whose home is two miles west of St. Francis, Michael Drury, 34, recently released from the U.S. Navy, and HENRY LUCAS, 33. The latter two are residents of the Sulphur Lick neighborhood. T. O. Patterson, Quinn Pearl and Charles Summers, agents from the local office of the Internal Revenue Service, made an investigation yesterday morning and reported that they found at the location a remarkably complete distilling plant. Besides the damaged boiler, of about 300 gallon capacity, was a 100 gallon still; three 750 gallon fermenting vats, two of which were partially full; ten mash tubs and around 3,500 pounds of corn and rye meal and malt, the agents said. Much of the outfit was under roof. Mr. Pearl stated that the revenue officers did not learn on whose land the outfit was situated and said that on definite connection between the operation of the still and the deceased men was established. He added that all of the equipment was destroyed by the agents. The blast, which brought instant death to the trio, was violent and according to early arrivals on the scene, the bodies were blown as much as fifty feet from the exploded tank. All were badly mangled and the left leg of one of the men had been severed. Flying pieces of the boiler are believed to have caused the multiple fractures and deep cuts which each of the three suffered. All were blackened by soot and dirt. A resident of the vicinity attracted by the loud noise discovered the tragedy and spread the news. Mr. Lucas was a son of Sidney and Ida Davis Lucas and was born on May 28, 1912. A number of years ago he was married to Miss Octava Beatrice Mattingly and to the couple were born eight children, one of who is now deceased. The surviving sons and daughters are Misses Frances, Venita and Mary Ellen Lucas and Harold, Anthony, Roy and James Lawrence Lucas. Buried in St. Vincent dePaul Cemetery, New Hope, Ky.; Section 4.
