SAD ACCIDENT

William Carrico, of Carlisle, was removing a huge portable saw mill engine last week when it fell over on him and a bolt pierced his breast. At last accounts he was still alive, although it will prove fatal.

We are indebted to Mr. John W. Spencer for further particulars of this sad accident. William and Ben Carrico (cousins) had bought a saw mill above Switz City, in Greene county and were engaged in moving it to Haddon township, this county.

Last Thursday evening they had the boiler loaded on a log wagon, when one hind wheel broke down and the boiler rolled off to the ground. The large iron bolts used to fasten the “log bolster” on the axle were left sticking up after the bolster was removed, and one of them was bent over by the accident. It was while engaged in an effort to right up the wagon and while leaning over this axle that the boiler rolled back on the unfortunate man crushing him directly down on the iron pin, which penetrated his breast to a depth of several inches.

It required several efforts to remove the body from its impaled position, as there was a large tap on the head of the bolt. When he was drawn off a portion of his right lung was drawn out with the tap.

The accident occurred about 9 o’clock Thursday night and Mr. C. lingered until 9 a. m. Saturday. He was an estimable man and leaves a wife and several children.

Aged 48 years, 4 months, 12 days old.
