WORLD WAR II
JOHN L. ABNEY, 80, of 133 Olo St., a molder for the former Whitin Machine Works Co. of Northbridge, Mass., for many years, and for Charlette Bros. Foundry of Blackstone, Mass., for five years, retiring in 1981, died Thursday at home after an illness. He was the husband of the late Irene (Spearman) Abney.
Born in Newberry, S.C., a son of the late Henry and Ida (Abney) Spearman, he lived in Hightown, N.J., before moving to Woonsocket 50 years ago.
Mr. Abney was an Army veteran of World War II and served as a truck driver in the India-Burma campaign. He was a member of Fairmount Post, American Legion.
He leaves a son, John L. Abney Jr. of Woonsocket; two daughters, Vivian Holloway of Woonsocket and Geneva Speach of Greenwood, S.C.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the St. James Baptist Church, South Main Street, Woonsocket. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.
