John A. Baker,son of Mary Rigsby and David Baker was born Feb. 19, 1882 at Harlan,Iowa. He died Nov. 16, 1969 at the age of 86 years,eight months and 27 days.In 1902 he married Gertrude Stoffels,and to this union seven children were born.
Mr Baker was employed by the Harlan Light and Water Department and was cited for over 50 years of service with Harlan Utilities before retirement.Mr Baker was an antique collector and resided at 506 Spring Street,The same house he was born in.In 1929 he married Margaret Mendrick,and to this union one child was born.
Mr Baker was preceded in death by his first wife,Gertrude,one son, and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife Margaret; three sons-Vernon,Olin and Harold,all of Harlan, four daughters-Mrs Mable Stalarow of Pomona,California,Mrs Alta Barnett,Mrs Dorothy Brensel of Harlan,Mrs Kenneth Nolan of Independence,IA; one sister Sarah Cox of Riverside,California; 27 grandchildren,and 32 great-grandchildren.He is also survived by several nieces and nephews,other realatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,Nov. 18,1969 at Burmeister Funeral Home with Pastor James P. Snyder Sr. in charge of services,Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery,Pallbearers were; Elmer Potter,Valentine Carl,Ottis Gearhart,Robert Gregory,Bernard Summers and Clifford Haskell.
