Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 17th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on April 25, 1861, only days after the Confederacy bombarded Fort Sumter, South Carolina, starting the war. Enlisted for a three month term of service, his regiment served until August 2, 1861, when it was mustered out at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Later that month he rejoined the Union war effort, being mustered in on August 22, 1862 as a Private in Company C, 15th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, a unit made up of many of Philadelphia's Society elites. His service was as such that he was promoted to Sergeant on October 31, 1862, to Sergeant Major of the regiment on November 1, 1862, and to full Captain and commander of Company L on March 1, 1863. Captured by Confederate forces at Dandridge, Tennessee on December 24, 1863 when his horse was shot by the rebels and pinned him down. He contracted disease during his 16 month imprisonment that debilitated him, causing his discharge on May 18, 1865, and his eventual death at age 23 in August 1865, only a few months after the end of the war.
