Son of William Cooper and Margaret "Peggy" Snider.

Benjamin was born in Haywood County, North Carolina and was residing in Jackson County, North Carolina where he was by occupation a farmer.

During the War Between the States he enlisted as a Private in Company F, Thomas' Legion at Quallatown, North Carolina at the age of 29 on July 19, 1862.

He was reported present through August 31, 1862 and was transferred to Company G of Thomas' Legion on September 1, 1862.

He was reported present through December 31, 1862.

He was reported on detached service in January – February 1863, "detailed with Capt. J.M. McConnell after absentees".

He did not return and was reported absent without leave from March 10, 1863 through February 29, 1864. No further records.
