The McGown's had eight children. Their sixth child, William Carroll McGown, received his medical doctorate in the first graduating class from Tulane University in New Orleans. Their oldest child, Andrew Jackson McGown, became a minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Their seventh child, Burrell Thompson McGown, was a farmer and rancher. And their eighth and last child, Margaret Josephine McGown, married businessman Sylvester Stansbury Munger, who at her urging left the practice of law in LaGrange and Bastrop to export cotton to Mexico in the Civil War. Applying for the Daughters of the Republic of Texas membership from Lampasas on Feb. 15, 1893, Margaret Josephine McGown Munger wrote about her mother saying "My mother was strongly patriotic and zealous in the cause of Texas, her adopted country. My parents gladly denied themselves, and sent out three sons (Andrew Jackson McGown, Samuel McGown, and William Carroll McGown) to battle for Texas rights and freedom. Two were in the Battle of San Jacinto, 1836, in com. Capt. Billingsly. The two younger went on several later expeditions, continuing in readiness to serve their country, until peace prevailed."
