The funeral was conducted Saturday, September 14, at the Luverne Lutheran Church, in Luverne, with Pastor Jan Peterson officiating. Interment was in the Luverne Cemetery.
Nels Donald Christensen was born to Christian and Oline Christensen on July 16, 1911, near Hannaford in Griggs County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Luverne Lutheran Church. He attended school in Steele County.
In 1942, he married Josephine Neusteader. They had two children.
Nels entered the U.S.Army in April, 1942, where he worked as a welder and aircraft maintenance mechanic. He worked in several countries during World War II, and in September 1945 he received his discharge from active duty.
Before the war, he had worked on farms and did mechanical work. After the war ended he worked as a mechanic in California and North Dakota. Nels was a master craftsman, and after retiring, he used his skills to tinker, repair and creat.
He made his home in Valley City and a cabin on Lake Ashtabula. Nels entered the Veterans Home in August 2002.
Survivors include: a son, Bruce, Escondido, California; a daughter, Sharon, La Mesa, California; and a sister Myrtle (Lee) Stephan, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Christ and William; and three sisters, Gladys, Lillian and Catherine.
