John Raymond Horlacher
(February 20, 1920 - June 13, 2009)
Ray was born February 20, 1920 in Hale, Texas to John Lawrence Horlacher and Mae (Miller) Horlacher. On April 16, 1942 Ray Horlacher and Dee Shaw were married in Yuma Arizona.
On June 16, 1942 Ray was drafted and served in World War II. During World War II Ray and a buddy were taking enemy fire in the trenches. Ray shared with his family that on that day he nearly lost his life when enemy tank artillery was so close he felt the tank shell make a whoosh sound as it narrowly passed by his head. On D-Day plus 40, Ray said that he and a buddy were the only members of their squad left. He served for 3 years in Northern France Normandy and Ardennes Central Europe Rhineland. He served in the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Buldge in January 1945. He served under General George Patton. He received the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Forty years after the war, Ray received the Bronze Star Medal. He then returned to Arvin where he continued to live in the home he built and where both sons were born.
Ray affectionately called "Carpenter" by fellow Tejon Ranch employees, worked for Tejon Ranch and retired after working more than 20 years.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents John and Mae; his wife Dee "Shaw" Horlacher and sisters Myrtle, Lois, Minnie, and Ruth. Ray is survived by two sons, Jerry Horlacher and his wife Linda; Raymond Horlacher and wife Lisa. Ray has three grandchildren Dennise, Staci, and Brett; and five great grandchildren Megan, Macey, Eric, Makenzie, and Cassey.
The family would like to thank everyone who helped care for Ray, and a special thanks to the staff at Odyssey Hospice. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Veterans Memorial at South Kern Cemetery District, 15543 South Vineland Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93307.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 19, at 10:30am in the Outdoor Chapel at South Kern Cemetery in Arvin for John Raymond Horlacher, age 89, of Arvin who passed away on June 13, 2009 in Bakersfield. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 18 from 2pm to 8pm.
