Harry Stages
Harry H. Stages, 91, of Las Cruces passed away on August 22, 2008, after a long life of being hardheaded, ornery and deeply loved by many. He was born August 6, 1917 to Sarah Jane Roberson Stages, seamstress and George Ames Stages, coal miner of Strawn Texas.

Born and raised in Strawn, Harry graduated from Strawn High School in 1935. That same year Harry joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which brought him to Engel, New Mexico where his first job was building roads and trails around the Elephant Butte Dam. In 1939 Harry was hired by P.R. Burn, Sr. of Hayner and Burn Construction Company as a mechanic and shovel operator.

In January of 1942, following the attack of Pearl Harbor, Harry left Hayner and Burn to join the Army/Air Corp. He served four years in the service including time in North Africa and Italy.

Following the war, in January of 1946 Harry returned to Las Cruces and resumed his position with Hayner and Burn Construction Company. The following April he married Lois Dinsmore. In the early years of their marriage Harry, Lois and their children moved from job to job following construction projects throughout New Mexico. After 10 years as a shovel operator Harry advanced to foreman. In 1960 he was promoted to general superintendent in charge of field operations. A dedicated company man, Harry remained as general superintendent until retiring in 1984 after 46 years with Burn Construction Company. Harry was an innovative jack-of-all-trades with an enthusiasm for construction and design. He was also a licensed pilot and relished in taking family and friends on aerial adventures! He was an enthusiastic marksman, hunter, fisherman, rock collector and cutter, bird-watcher, stargazer and beekeeper. In the early 70's Harry and Russell Burn developed Burn Lake as a local fun and fishing park until they sold the lands and lake to the City of Las Cruces.

Harry is survived by his children; Phoebe Stages of Albuquerque, Andrew Stages and his wife Alejandra of Las Cruces, Susan McKinney and her husband Roy of Albuquerque, Midge Baker of Las Cruces and Mary Stages Huband of Las Cruces. He is survived by grandchildren Nandy Stages-Hale and her husband Matt Hale of Las Cruces, John Stages of Albuquerque, Sarah McKinney and her husband Christopher Holden of Albuquerque, Lesley McKinney of Albuquerque, Tiffany Baker of Las Cruces, Deana Baker and her husband Ryan Christopher of Las Cruces, Joel Baker and his wife Meara of Rio Rancho, Patricia Huband of Las Cruces, Harry Huband of Las Cruces and great-grandchildren, Dustin Baker Wagenblast of Las Cruces and Ava and Jocelyn Baker of Rio Rancho. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, his brother and sister-in-law Dudley and Rosie Dinsmore of Shawnee, Kansas and brother-in-law Ben Melton of Richland, Washington. And last, but not least, Harry is survived by WWII 41st Repair Squadron friends as well as family and friends throughout the Mesilla Valley and across the nation.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 50 years, Lois Dinsmore Stages, his sister Ferne Cole and his father and mother-in-law, Cub and Rene Dinsmore and son-in-law, Mack Baker.

At the families request cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, August 29, 2008 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Sam Ritchey.
