Torrey, April 3 - GEORGE E. CHAFFIN, died at Bitter Creek, on the road between here and the Colorado River, Sunday morning at 2 O'clock. The presumable cause of death was quick pneumonia. Mr. Chaffin was in poor health when he left here three weeks ago yesterday to go to the San Juan placer diggins on the Colorado River in which he was interested. Entreaties not to venture on the hard trip were in vain, and he was the more ill when he reached the river. He stayed nearly a week and started home dying on the way. The body reached here this morning and tomorrow the funeral will be held at the Torrey meeting house.
The deceased was born in Nauvoo on the 3rd of September 1844, being expelled with his parents three days later by the heartless mob. He came with the to Utah in 1847 or 48 and when eighteen went to settle St. George. He later married Eleanor Jane Wade, and lived in Adamsville, Parowan, Cedar City and in 1882 bought a tract of land between Thurber and Teasdale in this county and moved his family to Teasdale. His farm is one of the best in
this country.
