Taken with Fatal Stroke at Columbus While Working.
Joseph N. Hengen, a well known mason and for thirty-two years a resident of this city, passed away at Columbus at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon at St. Mary's hospital from cerebral hemmorhage, as a result of a third stroke of paralysis. Mr. Hengen went to Columbus ten days ago, to take up work in his line and on Friday afternoon while working on a foundation for a building, he was suddenly taken ill and never regained consciousness.
Mr. Hengen was a member of a sturdy family of the Hoosier state, where he was born at Lafayette on March 8, 1854. He remained there until twenty-six years of age and before coming west conducted a brick yard with his father and brothers and learned his trade. Upon coming west thiry-two years ago, he concluded to locate in Grand Island at once and with the exception of two years has lived here ever since and followed his trade. On Nov 22, 1884, Mr. Hengen was united in marriage to Miss Doretta Spangenberg in this city and almost ever since that time they have resided at 101 S. Locust street. To this union there were born four children, three of whom are left to mourn the sudden death of their father. They are Peter C. Hengen of Lincoln, Fred W. Hengen of Omaha and Miss Louise E. Hengen who resides at home. Besides these there are two brothers and a sister living in Indiana. Mr. Hengen was a member of the American Nobles and of the local bricklayers union. The remains were brought to this city last evening.
The funeral will take place Wednesday morning at 9:30 from St. Mary's Catholic church.
