David Johnston Jr."Big David", was the son of David and Sarah Neel Johnston. He was the husband of Mary Glenn, daughter of William and Eliza Boyd Glenn. He was a powerful man physically, and was designated as "Big David" to distinguish him from a cousin of the same name. David was a farmer, living at his father's old home. He was of a sporting disposition and was much devoted to race horses. At the rear of his home he had a three-quarter mile race track, part of which is now under the York end of the Buster Boyd Bridge. Saturday afternoons were devoted to breaking and training colts. Black boys served as jockeys. Neighbors, friends, and fanciers would gather to see the sport. Trained colts then brought good prices. David and Mary's children were, Martha Jane, Amanda Emeline, Sarah Elizabeth, Mary Margaret, James Franklin (CSA), David Milton (CSA), and William Glenn (CSA Died during the War)
