CASHMERE - Andrew F. "Andy" Dirkes, 77, a longtime resident of Cashmere, died Monday, Oct. 23, 1995, in Central Washington Hospital.

He was born April 5, 1918, to Alois and Wanda (Knox) Dirkes at Wenatchee. He spent his first seven years in Palisades, moving with his family to Seattle in 1925. The family moved to Cashmere in 1930 and he graduated from Cashmere High School in 1936. He attended Central Washington College of Education for a time and then went to work for the Cashmere Hardware Store.

He married Mildred M. Daniels on June 7, 1942, at Puyallup.

He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II from December 1942 until December 1945. He was a supply sergeant and served in the European Theater in France, Holland, Germany and Belgium. Following his discharge, he returned to Cashmere and his job at the Cashmere Hardware Store, where he worked until 1966. He then bought the ranch in Dryden where his family still lives. Mr. Dirkes worked as an apple and pear orchardist for several years, and retired in January 1984.

He had been a member of the Cashmere Lions Club since 1941 and had received many awards, including Lion of the Year in 1977, the Life Member Award in 1987, several service awards and the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in April 1995, the highest honor awarded in the Lions Club. Mr. Dirkes had served on the Cashmere City Council and the board of directors of Grange Supply. He was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church. He had been a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Cashmere since 1930, where he had served on the Bishop Committee and was a lay reader.

Survivors include his wife, of Dryden; two sons, Daniel J. of Poway, Calif. and John A. "Jack" of Redmond; two daughters, Andrea M. Huss of Tacoma and Martha S. Brisky of Dryden; a brother, Gordonn of Winter Haven, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Weber of East Wenatchee; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a grandson.
