Three months after his birth his mother passed away. He was raised by his grandparents, Orson & Clarissa Eaton, until Orson's death in 1931.

Then Bert and his grandmother went to live with his uncle, Dennis M. Anderson, and his aunt, Clara Eaton Anderson. Dennis was his mother's brother and Clara was his father's sister.
