Cling was the son of Julius Alexander Wilhite & Mary Caroline Fryar.
He married (1)Louisa Wright on 13 May 1880 in AR. Cling and Louisa had no children. (2)Mattie Leach on 20 Jan 1884. Cling and Mattie had no children. (3)Margaret Ziler Singleton on 22 Dec 1887 in Polk Co., AR. Cling and Margaret had thirteen children.

The Radio show "Lum 'n Abner" that aired from 1931 to 1954 was modeled on life in Pine Ridge, Arkansas. The show became very popular and many tourists started to visit the town. Local citizens were recruited to portray the characters of this popular radio program. Among those were Cling, who portrayed the character of "Grand pappy Spears" and Margaret portrayed "Sister Simpson". There were many postcards in the area with the two posing in character. Their youngest daughter, Evelyn , is pictured as "Little Pearl" in some of the later years. A monument on the Courthouse Square in Mena is dedicated to Lum 'n Abner and have Cling and Margaret's names engraved.
