John W. Cole was born in Madison Township 80 years ago
Word was received in Tipton early Friday morning of the death of John Wesley Cole, 80, which occurred at the home of his son, Sanford Cole, near Noblesville, Thursday evening about 5 o'clock. Mr. Cole was taken ill in Jennings County several weeks ago and the Young ambulance went there and brought him to the home of the son. Mr. Cole has been ill for some time and the Farmers Loan and Trust Company of this city has been his guardian. Death was due to infirmities incident to his advanced age, he being past 80 years old.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the New Lancaster Christian Church and will be conducted by the pastor of the Methodist church of Noblesville. Burial will be in the New Lancaster cemetery beside his wife who died a number of years ago.
Mr. Cole was born and reared on what is known as the "Old Cole Homestead" southeast of Hobbs, later owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Creagmile and now owned by George Cook and wife of Tipton. He was the son of John C. and Mary Mount Cole, among the earliest pioneers of Tipton county, the father having come to the county from New Jersey in 1836 when he was a young man.
Only one member of the family is now living, George Cole who resides north of Elwood, Mrs. Charles Creagmile, Lemuel, Peter, Charles, and Newton Cole, sister and brothers are deceased.
When a young man, John Wesley Cole was united in marriage to Miss Kate Brown of the New Lancaster community and of this marriage seven children survive: Mrs. Leona Brunson, wife of Calvin Brunson, Mrs. Lottie Perkins, wife of David Perkins, Mrs. Della Balser, wfie of Claude Balser, Mrs. Ella Harbit, wife of Frank Harbit, of Elwood, Mrs. Cynthia Jack, wife of William Jack of New Lancaster, Mrs. Josie Yocum, wife of John Yocum northeast of Hobbs, and Sanford Cole of Noblesville, at whose home Mr. Cole's death took place. He is also survived by several grandchildren. The deceased was one of the well known residents of the county and one of its builders, having done his part in the development of Madison township. With his father he was one of the first progressive farmers of the county to commence under draining with timber. Pieces of these old drains occasionally are being turned up on the farms of Madison Township.
