JAMES JOSEPH MELLOY Sr.
Nov. 24, 1919 - May 30, 2009

James Joseph Melloy, Sr., age 89, a near life-long resident of Vancouver, WA, passed away at Glenwood Place Senior Living on May 30, 2009 with family by his side. He was born in Beaverton, OR to Richard Patrick Joseph Melloy and Sarah Lavonia Berst and was the fifth of six children.

As a Depression era youth, James and his family diligently made every penny stretch. James held several jobs to help his family, including: milk delivery boy, paper boy, and service station attendant.

About 1934, James was a catcher in the Greater Portland League, a semi-professional baseball team. At age 17, he survived a near fatal illness but with steadfast determination graduated from Vancouver High School in 1938. After high school, James continued his love of baseball playing for the city softball team. In addition, he coached his sons' Columbia Little League baseball teams for several years. This was an experience near and dear to his heart.

In the early 1940's, James accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service. James began a successful and rewarding career as a self-employed accountant and income tax consultant in 1950. From 1952- 1962, he was also employed as a full-time utilities accountant for the City of Vancouver. He retired in the early 1980's.

On January 4, 1942, James Melloy married his childhood sweetheart, LILLIAN GELBRICH ANNIN. They celebrated their 60-year wedding anniversary in 2002.

Together, James and Lillian enjoyed an active golfing membership at the Royal Oaks Golf and Country Club, traveling, snowbirding in Yuma, AZ, deer hunting, and spending time with family and friends.

Jame will be remembered for his level-headed advice, Irish wit, fighting spirit, boundless energy, generosity, and zest for life. He was a self-made man and jack-of-all trades, helping his children build their homes and offering assistance to family and friends whenever he could. In his final years, when asked how he was, he would often say, "Ball of fire". James was an excellent mentor and inspiration to us all. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his brother, Robert Melloy, Vancouver, WA; daughter, Meralee Smith (Gerald), Vancouver, WA; son, James Melloy, Jr. (Piyanart), Ther Villages, FL; son, Edward Melloy (Denise),The Villages, FL; five grandchildren: Robert Melloy (Yanci),Olympia, WA, Jennifer Glover (Jason), Seattle, WA, Matt Smith (Patricia), Post Falls, ID, John Melloy, Vancouver, WA, and Hyla Ernst (Adam), Japan; and seven great-grandchildren: Brian Melloy, Stella and Levi Glover, Ava Smith, David and Nora Ernst, and Lillian Melloy.
