Elmer was the second child in a family of seven children. His brothers and sisters were: Raymond Buckholz (ca 1911-), Arnold Buckholz (ca 1914-), Mildred Violet Buckholz-Comai (1916-2007), Eleanor Buchholz (1918-1919), Gertrude "Trudy" Buckholz-Savage (ca 1920-), and Richard Buckholz (1926-2010), all born in Michigan.
Elmer married widow Anna Celia (Pokojski) Otlewski on Mar 11, 1939 in Detroit and they settled and remained in Michigan until they both died. They had three children - Larry (1947-2011), Rosemary and Donald.
Anna and Elmer and their son Larry are buried in Cadillac Memorial Gardens West.
