George William Mackey

Passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the age of 93. George was born March 23, 1916, in South Lyon, Michigan, to Willard Thomas Mackey and Harriet Ethel (Wright) Mackey. His family moved to Brookings, Oregon, when he was a young man. In 1935, George met the love of his life walking down the street, Elizabeth Jane Caparoon. They were married in July of 1936 in Reno, Nevada. George and Jane had four children, Georgia Rose; Maybelle Rebekah; George William (Bill) Sr., and Michael Lee. George was a log truck driver and a truck mechanic most of his life. It was said "If George Mackey can't fix it, it can't be fixed". There is so much to be said for George, he was good at anything he tried. He played the harmonica beautifully and could whistle like no one else. He was a talented leather craftsman, a gifted gardener, and always up for a game of cribbage. George was funny, he had a sharp wit and loved a good joke. He was also a very loving and dedicated husband, caring for his wife during her extended illness. George and Jane loved their little dogs, Roger and Bridget, beyond words. They were wonderful companions. George was baptized a Jehovah's Witness in 1935 and was known by many of the brothers in the Roseburg area. After 63 years of marriage, Jane passed away in 1999. George is survived by daughter, Maybelle and her husband, Harry DeLay; son, George William (Bill) Mackey Sr. and his wife, Carolyn; and son, Michael Lee Mackey. His daughter, Georgia Rose Pieper and great-grandson, Scott Pieper, preceded him in death. His grandchildren are Sherry Metz, John DeLay, Pam Imhoff, Angela Alverado, Tina Speaks, Kimberly Little; Brad Pieper, Steven Pieper, Eva Pieper Reese, Camille Mitchell, George William Mackey Jr., Michelle Roth, and Aaron Mackey, as well as 30 great-grandchildren and 16 great great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Myrtle Point Care Center for the great compassion they showed for George, it is so appreciated. Services will be held Saturday, June 13, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. A celebration of his life will follow at noon, at River Forks Park.
