Obituary in the Kanabec County Times Saturday, June 19, 1886.
Death of Alvin DeWolf.
Last Saturday evening at an early hour the venerable Alvin DeWolf, for 20 years a beloved and respected resident of the town of Brunswick, this county, departed this life. His health had been failing for the past 9 months, arising from the dreaded Brights disease of the kidneys from which he died. He took his bed the Wednesday before he died and endured endless suffering up to Saturday morning when he became unconscious and remained so to the end. The funeral services took place Tuesday forenoon at 10 o'clock at the residence of his son Monroe P. with whom Mr. DeWolf has made his home. The house and grounds were crowded with relatives and sympathetic friends who had congregated to pay their final tribute to the memory of him who in this life had been so dear to them. Several beautiful hymns were sung, and the Rev. Mr. Martin, of St. Cloud, delivered a very able and touching address. At the close of the services at the residence the casket containing the remains was taken in the hearse and brought to Mora and interred in the cemetery. The funeral cortege extended over a quarter of a mile and was the largest ever witnessed in the county. The pall bearers were old neighbors of the deceased.
Alvin DeWolf was born in Barnard, Windsor county, Vermont, July 4th, 1813, and would have been 73 had he lived until the next Fourth.
He was married to Miss Semarimus Perkins (who survives him) in 1832, and the union was blessed with ten children: four boys and six girls, six of whom are living - Nathan A. Joseph, Louisa, Levisa, Maria and Monroe P. Nathan and Monroe are residents of this county and are noted for their sterling qualities. Mr. DeWolf emigrated to New York state in 1819, enlisted in the war of the rebellion in 1860, and served two years and was discharged for disability. He emigrated to the state of Iowa in 18-- and to -------, Minnesota, in 1866, moving to Brunswick, Kanabec county the next spring, where he has resided ever since engaged in lumbering and farming.
In politics Mr. DeWolf was a republican, and although he had no ambition for office he has held various offices in his town and was looked up to as one of it's leading citizens. In life he was honest and upright, ever ready to assist his fellow-man. In early life he united with the -------- Christian church, when he adopted a strict set of principles which he adhered to through life. If there was ever a good, honest, upright man Alvin DeWolf was one, and he will receive his reward in heaven.
