Sarah Elizabeth Wilburn, daughter of Lihue Tandy Wilburn Sr. and Cynthia J. Brittain, married Hamilton McGuire "Hamp" Scruggs, son of Jesse T. Scruggs and Mary Ann McGuire, on June 4th, 1863 in Shelby County, Texas. They had eleven known children together, four sons and seven daughters.

Sarah's husband was a Confederate Soldier and a Veteran of the Civil War. He served as a Private, in Company I, 1st (McCulloch's) Regiment, Texas Cavalry (1st Texas Mounted Riflemen), CSA.

Sarah's father, four brothers and two brother-in-laws were Confederate Soldiers in the Civil War. Her 2nd oldest brother, James S. Wilburn and her sister's husband, Benjamin H. Schooler were killed in the Civil War.

Scruggs age 60, Married-Head of Household-Farmer, wife Sarah E. age 52, and five children; Loutishy M. age 24, Hamp age 15, Bettie age 15, John N. age 10, Hallie age 7.
