Mary Jane Foster was the daughter of Rev. Jesse Webster Foster and Elizabeth Cotterill of Manhattan, Kansa, Bpt. 4 May 1914 Hurley, TX. She grow up in the church, as her father traveled across the Midwest from one Congregational church service to Summer Camps and Revivals. She married Edwin Granville Courtney 31 Jan. 1938 in Manhattan, KS. He was the son of Granville Calvin Courtney and Bertha Alice Fuller of Wichita, Kansas. Together they had 5 children who gave them 6 grandchildren. Mary had one sibling John Cotterill Foster of Topeka, Kansas. For many years her family resided in Florida where she was a Red cross volunteer during the late 1960's, she was a primary Sunday school teacher before the family relocated to Elberta,Al in 1974. Mary was a devoted wife and constant follower of the Christian faith. Both Mary and Edwin attended Sunday service and Wednesday bible studies regularly. Together they spent many Sunday evening visiting the ill or elderly. Mary sang in the Church choir, and filled in playing the piano when needed. Her favorite hymn was Amazing Grace and Christmas it was always Silent Night. She was a talented seamstress, and had a green thumb at gardening. She never had anyone dislike her nor spoke ill of them. Around 1976-7 Mary developed two types of cancers which required several treatments but she lost her battle with cancer after 7 months and passed away on Sept. 1 1978.
