Arthur Barry Lewis

Arthur Barry Lewis, a Camas, WA resident, died in Camas on Thursday, September 13, 2007. He was 88. Mr. Lewis was born October 30, 1918, in Thomasville, MO, to Cora Ethel (Davis) and Thomas Campbell Lewis.

He grew up in Thomasville working with his family on the farm. When WWII started, he enlisted in the Army and served three years overseas in Burma. After his discharge he came back to Missouri where he met and married Ida Pendergrass on November 3, 1945.

They moved to Wyoming and the to Crewport, WA, where he worked for Hanford Neclear Reservation. They moved to North Bonneville in 1954. During that time he hauled all the steel for the power lines in the area and also worked at Stevenson Co-Ply.

When the new powerhouse at Bonneville Dam was being built in 1974 they moved to Camas. He retired from Stevenson Co-Ply in 1982. Mr. Lewis enjoyed gardening and his family, especially loved that they benefited from his home canned vegetables and jam. Another hobby was woodworking and he made wonderful furniture.

Arthur Lewis is survived by his wife, Ida, at home; son, Bob of Washougal; daughter, Beverly Lape of Grand Bay, AL; brother, Ted of Casper, WY; sisters, Mildred Breeden of St. Louis, MO and Mary Ellen Wright of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Arthur Lewis will be Tuesday, September 18, 2007, 1:00 pm, at Straub's Funeral Home in Camas. Vault interment will follow at Washougal Memorial Cemetery.

The family suggest remembrances in Arthur's name be made to Hospice Southwest, PO Box 1600, Vancouver, WA 98668 or Doernbecher Children's Hospital, M/S 20, PO Box 4100, Portland, OR 97208-9908.
