PARIS, Ill. — Joseph A. Moore Jr., 87, of Terre Haute, Ind., and formerly of Paris, Ill., and Coram, N.Y., passed away at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Terre Haute. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 20, 1921, to Henrietta (Utzig) Moore and Joseph A. Moore. He married Florence Elizabeth Eve, on March 21, 1946, she preceded him in death in 2007. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia; his son-in-law, Thomas Slater; and his granddaughter, Alexis Ann Moore. He is survived by one brother, James Moore of New York; three children, Joanne Slater of Paris, Raymond Moore and his wife Rebecca of Paris, and Thomas A. Moore, Sr. and his wife Lisa of Terre Haute; nine grandchildren, Joseph Moore III, Rebecca, James, Kimberly, Timothy, Jessica, Tiffany, Joseph Moore IV, and Thomas Moore Jr.; and three great-grandchildren, Anthony, Gavin, and Maekenna. Joseph graduated from St. John's Prep School, in Brooklyn, in 1939. From there he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in both Panama and the South Pacific theatre during World War II. Returning home in 1944, he returned to school and, while raising a family, earned his architectural license. He worked in the architecture field for 40 years, before retiring from Delco Development Company in Jerico, N.Y., and moving with his family to Paris. He was an avid music fan who loved to play both the guitar and piano. He was a member of American Institute of Architects, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Paris. Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. CDT Friday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father David Zimmerman officiating. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today, with the rosary recited at 4 p.m. CDT, at Stewart and Carroll Funeral Home. Burial is at St. Mary's Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post 211 and VFW Post 3601. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the American Diabetes Association.
