Ray served in WWII as a Sargent in the US Army Air Corps in the 79th Air Service Squadron repairing fighter planes. He served in the battles of Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He came ashore at Normandy on D-Day and talked about how hard it was to jump into the dark water with a heavy backpack not knowing how deep it was, how to swim. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars for service in those battles. Ray was married to Guelda June Nettles on 11 Jun 1947. After the war Ray worked in a foundry, at the Kansas City Postal Terminal, and as a house painter.
