Esmeralda Treen helped found the Waukesha Kennel Club and served as its show chairwoman for 28 years. Her books on Dalmatians, written with her late husband, Alfred E. Treen, were long the definitive works on the breed. She was known as a Dalmatian breeder and active with other breeds.
And she was a judge for more than 50 years.
She judged dogs in all 50 states and a dozen countries, among them Russia, South Africa, India, Australia, Japan and Colombia.

The former Esmeralda Mayes - often called Esme - was born in St. Louis, the daughter of Joseph Frank Mayes and Esmeralda Berry Mayes (both buried at this cem.), where one of her close friends growing up was playwright Tennessee Williams. Both later attended the University of Missouri, with Treen graduating in journalism in 1934.
Margaret Bradham Thornton, a Williams' biographer, said that the playwright used his friends' names in plays and short stories.
As a young woman, she moved to Chicago in 1939 to become Midwest editor of Mademoiselle magazine. She married her husband in 1941, and they later settled in the Milwaukee area, living in Brookfield, Sussex, Milwaukee and Wauwatosa.
Her involvement with dogs began in earnest after their son, then 3, was seriously bitten by the family pet. He became afraid of dogs, and the search was on for another breed. Joe came to like Dalmatians, and that led to the Treens becoming breeders and judges.
Treen continued to work as an editor and writer, including with Spotter, The Dalmatian Club of America's magazine, and with other publications for dog lovers. She was involved in the push to develop the University of Wisconsin veterinary school.
Alfred Treen died in 2005. Survivors include her daughter, Esmeralda "Esme" Gibson of Pasadena, CA; son Joe Treen of Montclair, NY; and a granddaughter.
