Matthew James McAnary former owner of McAnary Ford, which became one of the largest Ford dealerships in the nation, died Sunday, June 2, 1985 at St. Anthony Medical Center, Crown Point. He was 65.

McAnary acquired the dealership in 1952, changed its name to McAnary in 1954, and expanded it in the 1960's into a multi-million-dollar operation. In 1980, Tom P. Gillespie Sr. became majority owner, and the firm's name was changed to Gillespoe Ford in April 1982.

It was under McAnary's leadership, as president of McAnary Ford, that the firm built its $3 million automotive center on 13 acres at 3401 Grant Street in 1965, making it among the largest Ford dealerships in the nation.

McAnary, a Crown Point resident, was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Crown Point.

Among the survivors are his wife, Jill, two daughters, Cindy (Ray)Thrall of Crown Point, and Lizbeth Surges, LaPorte; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Katie, Kelly, Matthew, and Jill Ruth; a sister, Bernice (Bill)Brown of Valparaiso; and a brother, Bob (June)McAnary of Merrill, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents: William Palmer McAnary (1884-1944), Mary Elizabeth (Boyd) McAnary (1889-1956, and a daughter, Lynn Susan McAnary (1949-1981)

Graveside funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, June 4, 1985 at Ridgelawn Cemetary, Gary, IN. Rev. Robert E Eversull officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Hoosier Boys Town in Schererville or a charity of your choice.
