The son of Vermont-born Joseph & Charity Himes, his whereabouts in 1860 are as yet unknown as he is not found in that census. By no later than 1864 he was living somewhere in or near Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 10, 1864, as a private with Co. A, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pennsylvania). Assigned to clerical duty in the quartermaster department, he honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865. He is not found in the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file but is in the company register as "Himes" although his organizational pension index is by "Hemes."

He married Mary McCann in 1866 and fathered Mattie Arminta (b. 06/15/66 - married Ira Ferman Mutzabaugh), Courtez Calvin (b. 10/20/68), Daniel V. (b. 02/28/71), Charity B. (b. @1873 - married William H. Hartzell), Mary Emma (b. 11/08/76), Annie Cynthia (b. 04/15/77 - married John W. Loper), and Francis M. W. (b. 09/??/79). By 1870, he was living with his family in Petersburg, Perry County, in 1900 was a resident of Middletown, Dauphin County, but died at Harrisburg State Hospital from "chronic endocarditis."

His birth location is a question mark. The 1870 and 1920 censuses and his death certificate list Pennsylvania, but the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census say Vermont. He is easily confused with another Charles Himes who was born in Vermont but who moved to Ohio.
