Enlisted in Army Sept. 19, 1917 at Hersey, MI. Private in Co. I, 126th Inf. 32nd Div. 63rd Brigade. Trained at Camps Custer, MI; McArthur TX; and Merritt NJ. Sailed from Hoboken NJ on Feb. 17, 1918 on the ship "President Grant". Landed Mar. 4, 1918 at Brest, France. Fought in the Alsace-Lorraine defensive sector and in this sector near Belfort was caught in machine gun fire about midnight on May 24, 1918. He was the first American killed on German Soil. Buried at Gilwalder, Alsace Lorraine. Later brought to US and President W.G. Harding placed a large wreath upon his casket at Hoboken NJ.
He was a former resident of Rushcreek Township, Fairfield County Ohio. His parents received the Croix-de-Guerre from the French Government. Joseph W. Guyton Post of the American Legion in Evart MI and a public school in Detroit built and named after him which opened in 1921 and closed in 2009.
